Chris saw the only way that he could escape those feelings of being poisoned by society and the only way that he can truly fee himself from his circumstances by simply running away and walking alone through the land, eventually isolating himself from everything. This is Chrisââ¬â¢ definition of happiness. To accomplish this he simply donated all of his money to charity and left without telling anyone. The deceit and lies from his family pushed Chris to run away from a pretentious reality and form his own version of what a happy and fulfilling reality was by surrounding himself with the harmony of nature. His final destination was Alaska, a land where he can escape from people, technology and all the other luxuries of everyday life. Chris spends most of his time contemplating about his life and about his ideas of happiness. While there is much speculation and controversy over what his actual plan was, without a doubt the end of his plan was to ââ¬Ësomehow get to Alaska. ââ¬â ¢(Krakuer 77). I think because of the people he met on his travels and the metacognitive pondering he did throughout his time traveling he ended up doing exactly what he planned, but unfortunately, nothing else. Chris McCandless was by no means suicidal, he did not have a desire to die, but his plans ended with going to Alaska. Before getting to Alaska, McCandless explored anything and everything he could; he was a very curious man, always ready to explore. He even canoed down miles of the Colorado River all the way to Mexico. Upon arriving in Alaska his disposition seemed to change, instead of wanting to explore and see everything there was to see like he had been doing before, he settled down in an abandoned bus for a few months. The only other place Chris had chosen to stay for any amount of time similar that was in Bullhead city, Arizona when he got a job at McDonalds in order to acquire supplies and to wait out the winter before starting on his path to Alaska. This shows he was at least smart enough to not go try and live in the Alaskan wilderness during the winter. So what was he doing alone in the wilderness? Why did he stop exploring? These are questions that can only be speculated on. What differentiates this story from other stories is that while reading the book you perceive him as a character; Chris McCandless was not a character, he was a person. Characters always have motivation behind their decisions, doing things for specific reasons or even foreshadowing to events that havenââ¬â¢t even been written about yet. People are completely random, sporadically doing things with little to no thought. While we can sit here and analyze why he did what he did and what he was thinking at every step, but what if he had stopped thinking, what if he commonly acted on impulse? These are things that characters do not typically do. Chris McCandless stopped exploring upon arriving in Alaska for a few reasons. First of all he didnââ¬â¢t plan to do anything except survive when he got there. He wanted to survive and ponder his existence in the raw untempered wilderness. Whilst out there he was just thinking about survival, and while being in that state of mind he wanted to find things that still brought happiness to him. He had happy moments alone out there, but they were few and far between, and in his words ââ¬Å"counted for little to nothingâ⬠(Krakuer 197). The most important thing Chris McCandles learned, and really the answer I think he was searching for was ââ¬Å"Happiness is only real when sharedâ⬠(Krakuer 77). Unfortunately he did not come upon this conclusion until it was too late to go back to society to share his newfound knowledge and to share his happiness with the ones he loved. That quote is really powerful and I believe it with all of my being. It is good to spend introspective time alone, but when it comes down to it if you had all the knowledge of the universe and no one to share it with, what would be the point? The same goes for what Chris discovered of happiness, while it is not impossible to be happy while you are alone it just does not seem to be worth anything unless you share your happiness. Happiness was meant to be shared by everyone and every thing with everyone and every thing, which is what I learned from John Krakuers telling of Chris McCandless journey to find the source of happiness. Happiness does not come from materialistic possessions, nor from people, or from money. Happiness comes from sharing everything from company and thoughts to houses and cars. If you are not sharing your happiness with someone else you more than likely are not as happy as you may think. If Chris had made it back he would have wanted to share the things that made him happy, just as I want to do now. Chris McCandless was a visionary and an eye opener. He has influenced many people and been a conversation point for many a collegiate-scholar. He explored many miles across North America and kept firmly to his beliefs. Chrisââ¬â¢s journey was one of philosophical searching, and I believe he found what he was searching for. It was not until he was starving to death in the Alaskan wilderness that he realized what it was he was searching for was not there, he wanted to find happiness, but happiness can only be shared. Chris McCandless could have and should have had a plan to get out of Alaska, but he wasnââ¬â¢t that kind of guy. He just wanted to go where life took him, and it took him to death. Although it was definitely a long, painful, and miserable way to die I believe before his death Chris McCandless came to his epiphany before the end. Because he was not yet dead his quest had completed and he was ready to return to society with his newfound knowledge. Unfortunately for him, his friends and family, and the entire world, Chris never made it back to our society and we never got to learn from a very wise man. Not all wisdom comes from age; wisdom comes from experience backed by thoughtful and introspective reflection, both of which were all Chris McCandless did on his long and eventful trip out into the wild. The males that participated in my project were over 40 years of age. They were both alumni of the University of Connecticut, and had both come to work for UConn some years later. The two females were current students at UConn. One was a pharmacy major, the other an English major. I came upon my first problem right away. What exactly constitutes a color name? The obvious answers are ââ¬Å"red, blue, greenâ⬠¦ etcâ⬠but what about ââ¬Å"grass greenâ⬠? Does putting a noun before the name of a primary color constitute its own color? If this were the case, there would be no end to the color names we use. ââ¬Å"Coca-Cola Redâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Laser-Jet Printer Grayâ⬠, ââ¬Å"The Carpet in the Office I Work At Blueâ⬠would all be color names under this system. However, the participants did seem to have a point. ââ¬Å"Sky blueâ⬠is certainly considered a color by most people. Who decides what is or is not a color? The web designers at Netscape and Internet Explorer have declared there are 140 possible colors to choose from when you view a website. The have names such as ââ¬Å"palevioletredâ⬠and ââ¬Å"snowâ⬠. Should ââ¬Å"snowâ⬠be considered a color? Can the object in the world that comes in that color, define a color? If so, which color of snow is the color ââ¬Å"snowâ⬠? I myself have seen more shades of snow then I could possibly count. How about ââ¬Å"palevioletredâ⬠? That is simply two color names put together with an adjective. Are ââ¬Å"brightbluegreenâ⬠and ââ¬Å"darkwhitebrownâ⬠also colors? Perhaps to answer these questions, we should ask the color experts at Crayola. They currently have 120 different color names in their largest box of crayons. Some of them include ââ¬Å"Fuzzy-Wuzzy Brownâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Macaroni and Cheeseâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Banana Maniaâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"Mountain Meadow.â⬠In addition, they have a variety of special color sets including ââ¬Å"Glitterâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Pearl Briteâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Techno Briteâ⬠colors. It also seems worth mentioning that Crayola has changed the names of some colors such as ââ¬Å"Prussian Blueâ⬠to ââ¬Å"Midnight Blueâ⬠, and retired others such as ââ¬Å"Indian Redâ⬠. Does this mean that ââ¬Å"Prussian Blueâ⬠is no longer an acceptable color name, or that it simply was not the correct name to reference the shade that is now known as ââ¬Å"Midnight Blueâ⬠? A few searches on the web brought me to some color name dictionaries that I thought might be helpful. I found that ââ¬Å"Gray 1â⬠all the way through ââ¬Å"Gray 100â⬠are considered color names by some. I have to wonder why each primary color does not have the same listing, for as I understand colors, there should therefore also exist ââ¬Å"Red 1â⬠through ââ¬Å"Red 100â⬠. My conclusion was that there is just no definitive list of color names. I therefore proceeded to allow my subjects to write names such as ââ¬Å"Christmas Tree Greenâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Sparkle Redâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Screaming Green.â⬠If Crayola can do it, I supposed my participants could too. The next thing I found was that personality seemed to effect the way the subjects went about the task of separating out the ââ¬Å"most differentâ⬠chips. Right away, all my subjects repeated ââ¬Å"Most different?â⬠with a look of pure confusion on their faces. Apparently this was not a familiar task for them. I would repeat, ââ¬Å"Yes, which one do YOU feel is the most different?â⬠It seemed that once I specified that it was a personal judgment they needed to make, and not a right or wrong answer, they were more comfortable making the decisions. The older males still seemed to have more problems then the younger females. They pressed on with questions such as ââ¬Å"What do you mean different?â⬠ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re ALL different, how do I choose which is most different?!â⬠One even seemed to get frustrated at the task, but all four agreed to continue, and in the end their answers were very similar. It seems to me that they were making their choices intuitively. If asked ââ¬Å"whyâ⬠they chose any specific card, they didnââ¬â¢t have an answer. They could not put into words why the yellow of chip E was more different from its closest chip D, then the greenish chips of F and H. I believe that this is why they had trouble with the task in the beginning. When there was a chance that there are right or wrong answers, how could they make choices that they could not verbally back up? Americans are taught to be logical about their choices. They are comfortable with answers being right or wrong. When given a logic question, most Americans will refrain from adding information from their personal lives or extraneous information, and instead will give you correct logical answer, even when it goes against everything in the real world. I find it to be interesting that something we encounter as often as color names, is something weââ¬â¢ve allowed to be so illogical and vague. We have no real color naming system and no real color comparing system. At what point does a shade of red become ââ¬Å"pinkâ⬠? How many different colors would we constitute as ââ¬Å"greenâ⬠? There donââ¬â¢t seem to be any definitive answers to these questions, even though computer can measure color very easily. We can calculate the ratio of the primary colors in a given shade, and its darkness to very easily replicate a color. Why does that color not have a definitive name? One might guess that we donââ¬â¢t have names for each color because there are simply too many. However, there are an infinite number of numbers we can mention, and each and ever one has its own distinct name. Why arenââ¬â¢t colors named by number? Perhaps we cannot differentiate between colors enough to recognize a given color alone, so we would never know which color name applied to a given shade. However, lets say I told you there are 100 shades of yellow. ââ¬Å"Yellow 1â⬠is the closest yellow shade to green, and ââ¬Å"Yellow 100â⬠is closest to red. ââ¬Å"Yellow 50â⬠would be the purest shade of yellow you can imagine. Would ââ¬Å"Yellow 75â⬠be more specific then ââ¬Å"Reddish Yellowâ⬠? If so, what would you call ââ¬Å"Yellow 93â⬠? Perhaps you would say, ââ¬Å"More Reddish Yellowâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Orangey Yellow Redâ⬠? Maybe even ââ¬Å"Sunset Yellowâ⬠would be your answer. In conclusion, I have to say that color naming is not an exact science. Itââ¬â¢s not even a guessing-game. It seems to be a free-for-all in which anyone can refer to any color with any title they like. Compare it to other colors, such as ââ¬Å"Bluish-Greenâ⬠, put a noun in front of it such as ââ¬Å"Sea Greenâ⬠, or come up with a completely random name such as ââ¬Å"Green Whisperâ⬠and no matter what, nobody could ever argue that its not a color. Then again, nobody will ever know to which exact color shade you are referring. Likewise color similarity judgments seem to be a vague, intuitive guessing game where people can make choices that are very similar to their peers, but that nobody can verbally back up. I was too late. Michael (Its or Its?) had beaten me to it. No doubt about it the error of writing its for its is on everybodys list of top ten errors that damage a writers credibility. So why do so many of us keep making this error in our drafts? As well as I know the rule, as many times as I have corrected the error in the manuscripts of others, the occasional its for its creeps into my own writing and must be caught in the final revision. Why do we do it? Because our subconscious mind tells us that the spelling its as a possessive is not un-English in the way that other errors are. We write the houses roof, so why not write its roof? The error its for its is the result of an instinctive mirroring of the possessive apostrophe s we use to form the possessive of nouns. Heres the kicker: when the third person neuter possessive adjective came into the language in the 16th century, it was spelled its for the very reason that the new form was modeled on the s of the possessive noun. The spelling its for the possessive adjective was acceptable down to about 1800 (A.C. Baugh, A History of the English Language, p. 295). Nowadays, however, to write its roof instead of its roof marks a writer as pitiably ignorant of the rules of punctuation and orthography. Im not suggesting for a minute that we throw the rule out the window. Its too firmly established for us to disregard it. Essay Shakespeare wrote the play Macbeth building up some relation with the reality in it. To introduce the historical context, this play has been written in 1606 while the reign of James 1st of England. This King was preceded by Queen Elisabeth. In the play, two characters are compared to her: Duncan, because she had the habit of gracing her favoured Nobleman just as Duncan graces Macbeth, and Macbeth, because she was ruthless, just as he is. As for James 1st of England, he wrote a book about witchcraft, called Daemonology. As a boy, he had been told many times of how his family descended from Banquo. In 1606, he watched a performance of Macbeth and was very pleased. All of this to say that when writing this play, Shakespeare had it well adapted to the historical context. Macbeth is seen as a dramatic character because he has got the attributes needed to be a tragic hero. For this, there are several important points: the character must have a high stature; indeed Macbeth is a nobleman, a Thane: ââ¬Å"I know I am Thane of Glamisâ⬠(I, iii p.7), he must commit an act which will begin his downfall; Macbeths downfall starts when he kills King Duncan in Act II scene ii, and he must die in or at the end of the play; which is the case in Act V scene viii ââ¬Å"Macbeth slainâ⬠. MAJOR PROBLEMS 1. They will travel on a different airline next time it will happen again and then again they will retry a new but how long they will keep on changing and ultimately they will feel all airlines are handling the customers in a same manner and eventually they will travel on same airline on which they traveled for first time. This is not necessarily true. TARP research indicates a passenger who files complain is thirty percent more loyal than a noncompliant and fifty percent more loyal than a dissatisfied complainant. Nowadays customers are not complaining much than they did a decade ago when half of the passengers will complain least once. Today, the rates of complaints even for big problems with serious consequences are not much and it is about 20%. The flights of reputed airlines arrived on time eighty percent of the time, they are able to set standards for even other airline and there operations are now used as benchmarks for other airlines. They are departing on time and getting to their destinations on time just because of effective management and quality tools. They have a proper and consistent process and they have documented their workloads properly. Their turnaround times are a lot better than other rivals in the industry because they use standardized operations. They know the more time plan will be parked at apron it is there loss the sooner the aircraft will be in air and is flying it is there profit so they land the plane, get new passengers and get the aircraft back in the air as soon as they can because that is only way airlines make money. Booming airlines are putting the aircrafts back in the air at much higher rate then other airlines because of the fact the more time the aircraft is parked at apron it is there loss and the more time it will be in air it will generate revenue for them thus making more profits. This makes customers at ease too as they donââ¬â¢t have to wait for hours to get to their destination. That means no long waits at airport thus no frustration for passengers. Reputed airlines set the expectations and then will meet the expectations. Airlines are thinking their problems are not much different from other airlines and everything is going smoothly even if not everyone is facing same situations. As they blame on weather and acts of God. Which everyone else is facing as well. Immense financial pressures, then with fuel prices going sky high and struggle in the low-fare market, is making the airlines believe that they are unable to afford to put all the resources togetherà to resolve their customer satisfaction problems. The most effective and cost efficient way to improve the complaint managing process is to prevent the problem by anticipating the problems instead of not acting on the complaint. It is better to take notice of the complaint than have the customer go away. The loyalty of customers who have experienced troubles is about 20% lesser than those of non-complainants customers. This 20% reduction includes both non-complainants and those who have filed the complaints. To prevent a problem the first thing one has to do is understand what is causing the troubles or problems for customers. In a recent it was found that most of the companies think if they have a customer who is dissatisfied for some reason, it is due to a worker who caused the dissatisfaction by doing wrong. The TARPââ¬â¢s study has found that most of the employees did a good job and hardly 20% of dissatisfaction was caused by staffââ¬â¢s bad attitude or by doing something wrong. Most of the problems which were between fourty to sixty percent are due to substandard processes, and the remaining are because of either customer mistake or confusion in either the kind of the product or service purchased. (Goodman 2006.) A satisfied customer can even get dissatisfied due to differences in current satisfaction level and previously measured one. Consider the following scenario. In 2008, a customer flies on a flight to Europe in Economy Class on an Airbus A380. She is happy to have her own personal TV screen, in which she can choose any channel, watch movies or listens to songs or even play video games. In 2009 she flies the same flight but in Boeing 777 to her dismay that her plane is not equipped with personal visual in-flight entertainment but it has movie projected on central screen. Even though the specific service of transportation did not change. This customer had increased her expectations about the service. Even though the airline provided the same transportation service in 2009 as in 2008, the customer was dissatisfied because her increased expectations were not met. While this customer may not file an actual complaint, the takeaway from this example is that customer dissatisfaction is a function of the gap between pre and post customer expectations about a product or service [Zeithaml, 1990]. So, the more perceptions fall short of expectations, the higher customer dissatisfaction will be. As customers can change their expectations over time, dissatisfaction can change even if the product or service remains the same. Therefore, customer dissatisfaction will be different from previous experience. Even if an organization delivers identical results over time, customer dissatisfaction may increase as customers increase their expectations. So it is imperative for airlines to manage the balance of customer pre and post expectations. Sasser (1978) originally coined the term ââ¬Å"service conceptâ⬠in reference to the bundle of elements packaged as a complete service for sale to the customer. In services marketing, research on customer satisfaction parallels Sasserââ¬â¢s concept, positing that satisfaction with elements of the service concept combine to create overall satisfaction with the service encounter (LaTour and Peat, 1979; Mitall et al. 1989; Oliver 1997). Managers may think that the companyââ¬â¢s complaint handling is fine, but if customers disagree, then the company still has a problem. Attribution research on consumer behavior suggests that customersââ¬â¢ attribution plays a pivotal role in shaping their attitudes and responses (Folkes, 1988), and it may mediate the relationship between complaint handling and post-complaint behaviors, such as negative word-of-mouth, future patronage etc. (Au, Hui, Leung, 2001). Customer satisfaction is desired because of its role in the service value profit chain in producing a stream of revenues that is resilient to competition and obtained at lower long run cost (Heskett et al., 1997). There are many areas in the airlines itself where faulty processes are leading to customer complaints and displeasure. Some are infrastructure problems, then the heavy air traffic issues specially high season, but these reasons affect an airline just as they affect every other airline. So why some airlines are consistently better? It is because they have designed their own skills to handle problems and their own operating measures to operate within the resources that they have. With reasons which are not in their control, they must do something to improve their systems. The Airlines need to utilize their resources in most effective way so as to operate effectively and best possible manner. Then they must exert influence on the people who have got power to control the infrastructure. Flight delays and cancellation is one of the leading factors in dissatisfaction among the passengers. The airlines needs to continuously improve their processes and systems, as it is vital for any other industry too. What use to happen doesnââ¬â¢t mean it can happen now too because previously customers were not aware much and companies couldnââ¬â¢t charm them with their advertising? The days are long gone now the customers are very well aware of situations and they ask question when they get to know something so as to know it better. What was satisfying the customers that time will now make them highly dissatisfied because times have changed so as the customers. The performance of airlines will decrease over time until unless something is done to improve it or sustain it. To sustain the current standards of performance, it is highly important to perform high level of maintenance. Then to have a better and improved operations airline need a lot more then just maintenance to have an effective flight operation. Weather is one of the major factors which is beyond the control of an airline and is one of the leading cause of flight delays and even cancellations and it is just not causing great deal of dissatisfaction to customers it is also costing airlines huge sum of money as then they have to give them accommodation as well. Some customers donââ¬â¢t care about the weather and they just want to reach to the destination as soon as they can, which is not possible as it can be very dangerous to fly in such weather. Even a highly sophisticated aircraft can not fight with the forces of nature. If due to bad weather flights are delaying or canceling the airline must provide the actual cause of delay instead of saying delayed due to technical fault. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) compiled figures on weather-caused delays, free of the other categories. Weather caused the flights to be delayed approximately 9.5% of the time during the 2006 for seven airlines. Then 13% of the flights were delayed for different reasons which were in control of airline like fueling, aircraft cleaning, loading, crew problems, maintenance and baggage handling Then if a flight will depart will late that means it will arrive late at next airport and then again depart late for next leg of journey as it is a chain which will effect the chain until it makes up for that time. It will be just not delay but the passengers who got to catch a connecting flight will also miss their flight because of late departure. There are many reasons of dissatisfaction among the customers and just not food and check in problems. It is just not the dissatisfaction of customers but the airline will have to bear additional costs as well. There are some delays which are not due to weather but not also in control of airlines like heavy traffic volume at airport, ATC, Holding pattern of aircrafts due to runway not available even Airport operations too. Last but definelt not least the security reasons cause hardly 1 percent of flight delays. It is because of extra security check at the airport that at the end hardly flight gets . Communicating with customers when a problem occurs is a better way to improve the satisfaction. In this high ââ¬â tech fast moving world due information and technology, everyone is now used to get instant information and communication. Passengers want to be instantly informed about the current status of their flights as if they are delayed or canceled. Industry experts said, the airlines cant change the weather in there favour, but what they can do is give customers better information. Several airlines have improved their communication processes by cross training and moving employees who arenââ¬â¢t busy due to a flight cancellation (baggage handlers, porters, etc.) and putting them in areas where other employees are overwhelmed at the gate and ticket counters. Rather than having two gate agents handling 200 unhappy passengers, there are now 10-12 employees helping. Lines move faster, and people feel like theyââ¬â¢re making progress. Airlines have so many cancelled flights and weather problems, so how does one can make your work force that much efficient so that you can decrease the customersââ¬â¢ concern level? They can easily do that with updated information, empathy, and assistance, even if you canââ¬â¢t get them from origin to destination any faster. Now the question is should expectations are seen as the level of desired service. Desired and adequate services are two more service level expectations conceptualized by researchers (Parasuraman, 1991, 1994; Zeithaml, 1993). Desired is what consumer wanted; it represents the level of service performance consumers believe an excellent service provider can and should deliver. Adequate service is what consumers accept and is partly influenced by consumers predicted level of service (i.e., will expectations). Separating these two types of expectations is a zone of tolerance, which can vary from consumer to consumer and from situation to situation (Parasuraman 1991). The zone of tolerance will be higher for the outcome than for the process dimensions of expectations since the single outcome dimension, namely reliability, is the most important. Thus, it will be easier for managers to exceed the process dimensions of expectations (i.e., responsiveness, assurance, tangibles, and empathy) than the outcome dimension (i.e., reliability). The adequate level of Service performance is similar to the minimum tolerable expectation defined by Miller (1977). Deserved expectations, another level of desired service derived from Adams (1963) theory of inequity, are a consumers subjective evaluations of her/his own investment. A consumer who, for example, has invested much in ticket feels that he/she deserves a high level of performance or a reward. The leading Airlines try to identify the specific flights where customers experience a high level of inconvenience or trouble. So when it happens, the airline will send them a letter to explain the cause and apologize for the inconvenience caused. They donââ¬â¢t want the customer to feel that they should not go back to the same airline again. Industry analysts have said that enhanced customer services will help settle the passengers, but only for the short term. They think no matter what airlines can do but people are going to be annoyed because of the fact that customers are not getting to the destination on time. Some airlines are reworking. If they can they do it better next time. Sure, but the purpose is not to do rework in the first place. You will get to know that it is not a value-added practice. You donââ¬â¢t want to have such process or people when they will end up in customers disatisfaction because it will be a rework that you shouldnââ¬â¢t have to do in the first place. "The signal man" a pre 20th century story by Charles Dickens and "If she bends she breaks" a post 20th century story. By John Gordon. They are naturally different because of their age. The signal man is pre20th century and is typical of the style of story from that era. If she bends she breaks is post 20th century so it has more modern words and is aimed at a younger audience. The stories themselves are similar in that they are both macarbre ghost stories. Titles ------ The title to every story gives the first impression and can give clues as to what the topic of the story is or what will happen.The signal man is a plain boring title thay does not make people wish to read it.If she bends she breaks on the other hand is an unusual title , it is mysterious and makes you want to read on. But a good title does not necessarily mean a good story. I found the signal man was a much better short story where as if she bends she breaks seemed a better title but it is aimed at young children, is a pretty boring story and the plot is easy to pick up, early in the story. The signal man is a boring title but it lets you know what the story is about without giving away the plot. If she bends she breaks is a very intersting title and you only know what it means when you've read the story so it is very effective. But "if she bends has an unusual title, it makes you want to read it, and only when you read it do you find out what, "if she bends she breakss" mean. "if she bends" title, was very good, the story was not as good, in contrast it was the opposite for "the signal man", it had a plain title, but a good story. Beginings and settings ---------------------- The beginning of the signal man, creates an atmoshpere of the supernatural by, its settings.
